Measures key electrolytes in the urine - typically sodium, potassium and chloride - to help assess fluid and electrolyte balance, kidney function, and causes of abnormal blood electrolyte levels. It can also help investigate dehydration, kidney disorders and disturbances in sodium or potassium regulation.
Follow the laboratory's instructions for urine collection. Depending on the test, either a single urine sample or a timed/24-hour urine collection may be required. Maintain your usual diet and fluid intake unless advised otherwise. Tell your healthcare professional about any medicines or supplements you are taking, particularly diuretics or electrolyte supplements.

Measures urinary sodium, potassium and chloride to help assess kidney handling of electrolytes and fluid balance. It may be used when investigating dehydration or fluid imbalance, abnormal blood sodium or potassium levels, kidney disorders, blood pressure problems, and some endocrine or metabolic conditions. Results are usually interpreted alongside blood electrolyte levels and the patient’s clinical circumstances.
