A Bence Jones Protein test looks for abnormal free immunoglobulin light chains in the urine. These proteins may be produced by abnormal plasma cells and can be associated with conditions such as multiple myeloma and other monoclonal gammopathies.

Follow the laboratory's urine-collection instructions carefully. A 24-hour urine collection may be required, in which all urine passed during the specified period must be collected. No special diet is usually required unless specifically advised by the laboratory or clinician.
This is a specialist investigation rather than a routine health-screening test. It is generally requested when a plasma-cell or monoclonal protein disorder is suspected or is already being monitored.

Used as part of the investigation or monitoring of plasma-cell disorders, including multiple myeloma, light-chain disease and related monoclonal gammopathies. It is usually interpreted alongside blood tests such as serum protein electrophoresis, immunofixation and serum free light chains.
Bence Jones proteins are not normally present in significant amounts in urine. Detection of a monoclonal light chain may indicate abnormal production of immunoglobulin proteins, but an abnormal result does not by itself establish a diagnosis. Results require interpretation alongside other laboratory findings and the patient's clinical assessment.
